    Hello wmp.com,

I have to say, great site. It covers a lot of stuff that is routine, but the average user wouldn’t know. Most of them are commonplace in windows machines.

I think you guys should do more posts on privilege escalation, particularly on Windows machines. One of the most common ways to get into them is to use “at” with an interactive cmd. Also, you can sometimes also use unsafe functions in html files through I.E. to gain access…

Those kinda things are commonplace all around, and they are really simple to fix using group policy.

Resetting the Administrator password (easily by reinstalling windows, the ONLY things that will happen is: 1. The My Documents folder in the ROOT – not individual user nor All Users accounts – contents may get deleted (but who uses the ROOT My Documents folder?) AND 2. any and all encryption HAVING HAD BEEN USED BY WINDOWS will be UN-retrievable, unless you can know the Administrator password. The Original Main Administrator – the machine Admin. Other files that were encrypted by OTHER THAN WINDOWS Programs will still work, as long as you know the passwords to those files, of course.

Once reset, you will be able to access ALL PREVIOUSLY CREATED ACCOUNTS INCLUDING THE MACHINE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT.

BIOS passcode unlocking? You are all kidding, right? JUST PULL THE BATTERY FOR 5 MINUTES, put it back in, then NO PASSCODES!

  22. bungholeyo said,

    on June 4th, 2011 at 3:48 pm

Ooh, sorry, sometimes there is also a jumper in some laptops, but almost all modern desktops. Sometimes just moving the jumper correctly will bypass or erase the BIOS passcodes and challenges.

  23. bungholeyo said,

    on June 4th, 2011 at 3:50 pm

Also, more modern laptops, pull the CMOS, the MAin battery and the power for at least 5 minutes, but I have had to wait days for some laptops; Macbook Pros, High-end Dells and a lot of Lenovos mostly

Dell also has ON TIME hard-coded legitimate backdoor passowrds that are protexcted with the Authenticatio System , as long as you can prove owenrship. Otherwise, carcking an 8 character password shouldnt take these guys more than a couple of hours to go through all the possible combos needed – if longer than 8 characters? Good luck, that could take up to a year and a half if complex enough. Would have to containt at least one lc, 1 UC, 1 number, and 1 special to be complex, though.

Can you do something with the HP ProBook 6550b ? The system does not return a code when an incorrect BIOS password is attempted – it displays something like The system is disabled. Power off to restart.
